Marnie Webb
VP / CompuMentor, NetSquared

“Technology Challenges of Non-profits”
Friday, June 9, 12:30-1:30pm
Classroom 4 (Sunnyvale)

This week, we are pleased to have Marnie Webb of CompuMentor / NetSquared joining us for the TechDev Speaker Series. If you’ve ever wanted to talk about how to leverage your technology skills for social good, you should definitely stop by for this talk, which we hope to be more discussion than lecture. Marnie describes her talk as follows:

“At this Friday’s meeting, I’d like to talk about the ways that nonprofits are currently using Yahoo! tools (examples pulled from our case studies and from the results of a social media survey we’ve just completed). Then I’d like to share the kinds of problems that nonprofits are trying to use technology to solve – many of these have to do with data visualization but may also include simplified publishing, pushing a variety of issue-based information to a wide spread constituency, and ways to keep in touch with a wide spread constituency.”

As always, please RSVP so we can plan logistics appropriately.

His algorithm and its variations are preferred over simplex. The method used in his algorithm has revived interest in interior methods, which are currently an important area of research in mathematical programming.

He has worked at American Microsystems, IBM San Jose, AT & T Bell Laboratories, Princeton University, and TIFR Bombay. Among several awards, he has received, President of India Medal, Fellow of Bell Laboratories, Distinguished Alumnus Award from IIT Bombay and UC Berkeley. He has 6 patents to his credit. PanIIT Regional Alumni Conference in June 23-25 in Toronto is being held at a wonderful Canadian Resort this Summer.
Rabiz Foda, Conference Chair-person would like you all to come and enjoy the warm canadian hospitality. I suggest you combine this trip with family vacation to Canada this June. This opportunity will bond all twelve alumni population centers in North America: USA and Canada — under a common banner.

We are very excited to have Nimish Mehta as the guest speaker for our next fireside chat event on May 14th, 2006. Nimish will speak from his years of experience working at companies like SAP, Siebel Systems and Oracle where he has overseen many acquisitions.

If you are an entrepreneur with a small startup and trying to figure out the best exit strategy for your company, then this is a must attend event. You will get to know what happens on the other side of the table, what is it that the potential acquirer is looking for. It should help you decide on what signals to send out and what not to. Also, learn how to strengthen your case against a possible competitor.

The event will start off with a formal talk by Nimish but we are hoping that there will be a long informal Q&A session where Nimish will take your questions. So, bring your inquisitive self to the table. The event details including registration, directions, schedule can be accessed from http://bayarea.iitdef.org/UpcomingEvent.

IIT Delhi/Yahoo! Speaker Series presents:

Steve Gillmor
“GestureBank and the Gesture Economy”

Friday, April 28, 12:30-1:30pm

This week, we have Steve Gillmor joining us for the TechDev Speaker Series. Along with Dave Sifry of Technorati, Steve Gillmor was behind the spec for attention.xml (http://developers.technorati.com/wiki/attentionxml), an open standard built on open source that helps you keep track of what you've read, what you're spending time on, and what you should be paying attention to. Steve also co-founded AttentionTrust.org (http://www.attentiontrust.org/), which was profiled in TechCrunch (http://www.techcrunch.com/?p=100) but has since moved on to the concept of the “Gesture Economy” – for a detailed explanation of gestures in Steve’s inimitable style, be sure to read: http://blogs.zdnet.com/Gillmor/?p=189. If you never quite got what attention was, I offer this quote from Steve: “Gestures are the monetization of attention” (http://blogs.zdnet.com/Gillmor/?p=236). Come find out what that means!

Bio:
Steve Gillmor heads the Gillmor Gang podcast (http://gillmorgang.podshow.com/), a contributing editor for ZDNet, and a contributing writer for Release 1.0. His widely-read blog is at http://blogs.zdnet.com/Gillmor/. Steve will be speaking at ad:tech in SF this week and at the Syndicate conference in NY next month (“It’s the Gestures, stupid!”).

Since its start, a few weeks ago, the IITD blog has been talking about Alumni activities and chapter stuff. But this blog is not intended to be an administrative diary only. We would like to use this blog as a unifying forum to bring the IITD Alumni of the SF Bay Area together and help them reach out to one another.

With that goal in mind, we have today our first guest post, from Anurag Wadehra, IITD class of '85. He expressed interest in using the IITD forum to spread the word about a movie he produced that has been critically acclaimed worldwide. We are happy that Anurag has chosen this forum as a voice to the IITD Alumni and hope that other alumni will also use this as a way to share information useful and relevant to our community.

Oh, and by the way, if you find this forum useful to you, please spread the word among the other alumni in the bay area and send them a link to the blog – iitdelhi.wordpress.com.

Thanks, yours truly,
Priyank Garg,
IITDEF Bay Area Team

"Borrowed Fire: The Shadow Puppets of Kerala"
http://www.kathanjali.com/BF_details.html

Shot in the remote villages of Kerala in southern India, this film documents the story of the last surviving scholar-puppeteer, Pulavar, and his lifelong struggle to practice and preserve this ancient performing art of Tolpava Koothu and its rendition of the Hindu epic, the Ramayana. Exquisitely capturing the art and its milieu, this is a rare and poignant glimpse of a flame on the verge of extinction.

Over the past few years, this film — with ironically minimal marketing support — has been doing the rounds of several film festivals, has been critically acclaimed, was picked up and distributed internationally by UC's media department. As a result it is now housed in the library collections of several leading universities and colleges all over the world! Check out the link above to see the appeal this film has generated.

It has now been picked up by Shadowlight Productions and they are going to show it in San Francisco at the Artists' Television Access next month. Shadowlight's mission is to bring the stories of the world to light. They hope to build a world community through cross cultural story telling and the magic of shadow theater.
