Dear all
The New York chapter of the IIT Delhi Excellence Foundation organized a Poker fund-raiser on May 20 2007. The objective was to raise funds for the local chapter to facilitate organization of future events, in the course of a fun networking event. More than 20 alumni participated in the 3-hour event, which was organized at an Irish pub-cum-restaurant. We raised a total of $528 from the alumni, of which $225 was given away as prizes to the winners, and another $290 was used to pay for the venue. We netted out slightly positive overall from the event.
While the net amount we raised did not meet our initial expectations, the event turned out to be very enjoyable. Several folks attended an event for the first time and connected with fellow alumni. We hope we’ll get to see more of them in future events. Pictures for this event are available at http://picasaweb.google.com/iitdinny/Poker
Our next event is a picnic in Central Park on June 17. Please join us for what promises to be a fun-filled, family event
Best Regards

Folks,
The reservation issue has certainly stirred up a lot of debate, and the Pan-IIT organization took a stand on this issue recently. They drew up a letter addressed to the President & PM on this issue.
The letter was delivered to the recipients and dialogue has been started with the Government to work out solutions that are effective and not divisive.
Thanks,

The Indian Institute of Technology Alumni Canada is planning to hold a North American Regional Conference in Toronto on 24, 25 June 2006. The conference is organized by the IIT Alumni Canada in collaboration with PAN IIT, USA. The theme of the conference is "Knowledge and Skills – Creating Values beyond Borders". Please visit www.iitac2006conference.org for more details about the conference.
To give you some brief details, the "Indian Institutes of Technology Alumni Canada" (IITAC) is an incorporated not for profit organization in the Province of Ontario. The IITAC has grown from a small informal group started in Toronto by pioneering IIT Kharagpur alumni in the 1970s.
We are planning to hold a one and one half day Conference on 24, 25 June 2006 in Mississauga, Canada. We expect to attract IITians as major participants primarily from Canada, a significant number from the USA and some from India too. PAN-IIT, USA (www.iit.org) is our main partner and is promoting the event in the US.
Some of the main features of the conference is address by the mayor of Mississauga Hon Hazel McCallion, opening by High Commissioner of India in Canada, Her Excellency Ms. Shyamala Cowsik, lunch address by Hon. Mr. Harinder Thakar and participation by CEO’s of many companies in Canada, India and USA. The conference will bring together engineers, entrepreneurs, University faculty members, business leaders and decision-makers from industry, government and academia from North America, and India. Given the pace of economic progress occurring in India, this conference provides an ideal setting to explore and create awareness of potential collaborations between Canada, including our partners in the United States, and India. This is eventually expected to generate mutually beneficial business contacts, university collaborations and enhanced two-way employment opportunities. The conference participants will have a unique access to networking with many high profile business leaders while at the same time enjoying intellectually and socially stimulating interactions.

Speaker: Prof. Paul Milgrom, Stanford University – Economics of Combinatorial Auctions – 8 June
June 6, 2006
Who: Prof. Paul Milgrom, Stanford University
Paul Milgrom is the Ely Professor of Humanities and Sciences in the department of economics at Stanford University. Milgrom’s published work in economics ranges widely, from studies of incentives in organizations to economic history to the microstructure of financial markets, but he is best known for his theoretical and practical contributions to the design of auction markets, especially to the pioneering radio spectrum auctions in the US and elsewhere. A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Milgrom’s recent book Putting Auction Theory of Work has been hailed as “the definitive reference in auction theory for decades to come.”
What: Economics of Combinatorial Auctions
Advances in computing technology have made it increasingly feasible to operate resource allocation mechanisms that entail solving combinatorial optimization problems. The so-called “pivot mechanism” is an auction procedure that has the desirable properties of selecting outcomes that are efficient according to the bidders’ reported information and making it a dominant strategy for bidders to report their information truthfully. This lecture will describe the disadvantages of the pivot mechanism and highlight alternative designs that may perform better in practice.
